Steps From The Experts For DIY Window Pane Replacement
Windows are more than just a decorative feature of a home; windows allow light in while keeping the weather and pests out. In most cases, a window is typically made up of one or two pieces of glass (hence, single or double pane windows). These pieces of glass are known as window panes. Some windows will only have a few panes, while other windows will be made up of many panes. If a pane should become damaged, then you will need a window pane replacement immediately.
The first step to repair a broken window pane is to remove the window and the broken glass. This is normally a simple process but you MUST be very careful and take all safety precautions so there are no accidents. It is important to wear work gloves, protective goggles, and pants that cover any openings in your shoes. Also, keep any children and animals away from the work area.
Once the glass is removed you will want to scrape away all the excess window putty. If the putty is old and extremely dry, which is common, then you can use a heat gun or standard hair dryer on the hottest setting to soften up and remove the putty. Be careful not to damage the surrounding frame.
The next thing you need for window pane replacement is to look for small metal stays, commonly referred to a glaziers. These hold the glass tightly in window frame. If the window frame is metal, you might be looking for spring clips instead, which should be reused if possible.
After all of this, it is time to measure the space where your new window pane will go. You can do this by measuring the outside of the window frame and subtracting 1/8 of an inch. Some window frames may be smaller so make sure you check before the glass is cut.
You will probably want the glass to be cut by a professional so you don’t waste money on mistakes. Many home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowes offer this service to their customers. You can usually find the window putty or window caulk and your replacement glaziers on your own, if needed, at a glass cutting shop or home improvement store. Once you have all of the materials and the glass is cut, then it is time to actually do the window pane replacement.
Simply caulk a bead or create a string of window putty in between your fingers and place it on both sides of the inner edges of the window frame and place the glass into the frame itself.
Next you will want to install the glaziers into the frame to hold the new glass securely. These should be installed about every 4 inches around a window frame. Then, you will want to take the window caulk or putty and apply it all around the frame and the window to give it a good seal. If there are any air bubbles, work them out before the putty or caulk dries.
Lastly, after the putty or caulk has set, wait at least a day or two for this, then you can clean up any excess putty and paint the frame if so desired.
Hiring a professional to perform window pane replacement is certainly easy, but it can be a bit costly, especially if you need window frame repair as well. If you are even the slightest bit handy and you have a little time to commit to it, you can replace your broken or damaged window pane yourself. You will save yourself some money and you will have the satisfaction of known that you did the job yourself.
